SIIM offers science and research in its peer-reviewed Journal of Digital Imaging (published six times a year); the latest Society news, educational content, and feature articles in our SIIM e-newsletters; the Practical Imaging Informatics textbook that defines the field of medical imaging informatics; the popular SIIM University Primer Series on issues affecting the digital medical enterprise; along with white papers, training manuals, meeting syllabi, and scientific abstract collections.

Journal of Digital Imaging (JDI)

SIIM's scientific journal, the Journal of Digital Imaging,  was founded in 1988 at the cusp of the evolution of computers in radiology. Since then, JDI has become the go-to resource for imaging informatics research and science. As one prominent researcher put it recently, "Most of the imaging informatics articles with clinical impact in radiology are in JDI." The Journal of Digital Imaging is a peer-reviewed publication and is indexed in MEDLINE.

Practical Imaging Informatics:
Foundations and Applications for PACS Professionals

Imaging Informatics Professionals (IIPs) have come to play an indispensible role in modern medicine, and the scope of this profession has grown far beyond the boundaries of PACS.  A successful IIP must not only understand the PACS itself, but also have knowledge of clinical workflow, a background in several medical specialties, and a solid IT capability regarding software interactions and networking. With the introduction of a certification test for the IIP position, a single source was needed to explain the fundamentals of imaging informatics and to demonstrate how those fundamentals are applied in everyday practice.  Practical Imaging Informatics describes the foundations of information technology and clinical image management, details typical daily operations, and discusses rarer complications and issues.  Written by world-renown experts from the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine, this book is an indispensible reference for the practicing IIP, those studying for a certification exam, and any professional who needs quick access to the nuts and bolts of imaging informatics.

SIIM/SCAR University Primer Series

The SIIM University Primer Series was established as a companion program to the popular SIIM University presentations, featured at the SIIM Annual Meeting and by an extension program at other industry meetings. The primers cover various aspects of the digital medical enterprise, including electronic reporting, archiving issues, quality assurance, security, and decision support.

SIIM Expert Hotline

The SIIM Expert Hotline is designed for PACS and imaging informatics professionals to tap into the expertise of SIIM members. The question-and-answer formatted resource was previously available only to SIIM members in print. It is now archived and updated online for both members and non-members. Searching and viewing are free on the site, which provides a wealth of information for professionals who use or are interested in PACS technology and clinical implementation of information systems in imaging.

SIIM members may post questions to the site free of charge, and non-members may post a question for a $150 fee, which includes a 1-year membership in the Society.

SIIM's "Need to Know Series" - in Development

In an effort to keep up with the needs of its members, SIIM is developing a a series of "need to know" Wikis on the topics of Digital Radiography, Archiving, Displays, and TRIP. Stay tuned!
