The HITECH act, included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, allotted significant funds to incentivize the adoption of electronic health records. However to receive these funds, physicians and hospitals need to demonstrate that they are meaningful users of this technology. There has been much confusion surrounding the evolution of this law, its multistage roll out, the requirements, and how radiologists can alter their workflows to achieve compliance. Meaningful use is an important government initiative to drive adoption of electronic medical records. Whether and how radiology can participate has been discussed extensively. Now, radiology departments need to act. This session will describe how some departments are acting in order to qualify for "MU" incentives.

Meaningful Use in Medical Imaging: New Technologies for US Healthcare Reform (Login may be required)

Regardless of whether it’s new or existing, all technology will need to be certified before it is deemed acceptable for Meaningful Use. Dr. Dreyer will describe ways to analyze your practice and existing technical infrastructure to determine which MU measures you may already be eligible for, and to define a successful pathway towards MU either with a single vendor or through a best-of-breed purchasing approach. Further, this lecture will provide you with the ability to communicate intelligently with your vendor(s) to understand their plans for certification of their products. Finally, if you have created any technology of your own, this lecture will guide you into the necessary steps for self-certification.
