SIIM e-Tutorial Series on Producing Journal-Quality Images

Questions about how to manipulate your abstract’s figures and images? SIIM can guide you through the process with our e-tutorial series on Image Manipulation Guidance: Producing Journal-Quality Images. Visit http://www.siimweb.org/e-tutorials today to use this practical and essential SIIM resource!

SIIM Annual Meeting Awards (Information and instructions regarding young investigator travel awards, Bauman best student paper, and poster and demonstration prizes)

At the SIIM Annual Meeting, scientists, researchers, physicians, health care IT decision drivers, PACS/RIS administrators, and vendors from around the world come together to explore the dynamic field of imaging informatics. Original scientific abstracts are encouraged from all specialties including radiology, pathology, cardiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, orthopedics, veterinary medicine, and dentistry.

The SIIM 2011 Scientific Program represents the science at the heart of the SIIM Annual Meeting and examines the latest theories, concepts and experiments developed by those in the field of imaging informatics.

Accepted papers will be presented in scientific sessions incorporated into the SIIM 2011 learning tracks. Scientific sessions are interactive, with "contexting," discussion, and debate led by session co-chairs.

The scientific program also features poster and demonstration exhibits, with "roving tours" and SIIM-sponsored research.

Awards include poster and demo prizes, New Investigator Travel Awards, and the Roger A. Bauman Award for the Best Student Paper.

Due date for submission of abstracts:
September 10, 2010

Notification of acceptance:
November 1, 2010

Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts for scientific papers, posters, and demonstrations. Presentation of either practical experiences or basic science research is acceptable, but strong preference is given to presentations of actual work rather than descriptions of future plans or general reviews of subjects.

Accepted abstracts will be published online and compiled into a publication that will be available at the meeting.

In addition, all authors of accepted abstracts are expected to submit a full paper prior to the meeting to the Journal of Digital Imaging (JDI), SIIM’s peer-reviewed scientific journal. Papers should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdi by May 21, 2011. All papers will go through the peer-review process in consideration for publishing in JDI. The Journal of Digital Imaging reserves the right of first refusal.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS INSTRUCTIONS

Strong preference will be given to papers that prove or disprove hypotheses related to computer applications in medical imaging.

Vendor Abstract Submissions:

If the author list includes one or more vendors, the following additional criteria apply for the abstract to be considered for presentation:

  • Submission must be a hypothesis-driven abstract (not experiential).
  • If a product or potential product is evaluated, the evaluation must be blinded and measurable.
  • Presentation can describe the product in the methods section, but company and product logos cannot be placed on presentation slides.
  • All authors must sign a conflict of interest form at time of abstract submission whether or not first author is a vendor author.

Format:

Abstracts should be between 800-1,200 words in length.

To be eligible for SIIM 2011 scientfic awards (Young Investigator travel, Bauman student paper, or poster/demo awards) an extended abstract of 1200-1600 words is required no later than October 11, 2010.

The abstract is to be submitted in 1 of 2 formats: Hypothesis-driven or Descriptive

  • Hypothesis-driven Abstract: Includes hypothesis, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and keywords.
  • Descriptive Abstract: Includes background, evaluation, discussion, conclusion, and keywords.

Preferred Methods of Presentation:

  • Paper Presentation (10–12 minutes suitable for most papers)
  • Poster (4' x 8' front illuminated for detailed math and/or fine image comparisons)
  • Demonstration (for interactive computer displays - poster board also provided)

Language:

All abstracts must be submitted in English.

Deadline:
September 10, 2010

Submission:

This is a paperless submission process. Downloading template/email submission required.

A signed 2011 Conflict of Interest Disclosure (COI) Form (PDF) is required at time of abstract submission. Please fax the COI form to the SIIM office at 703-723-0415 or mail to SIIM, 19440 Golf Vista Plaza, #330, Leesburg VA 20176.

Figures and Tables:

Image Submissions Guidelines (PDF)

Figures and tables must be submitted according to the following guidelines:

• Images must be submitted as .jpg, .tif or .eps;
• Images must be high-resolution, at least 300 dpi;
• There is a limit of 5 graphics per submitted abstract;
• The position of figures and tables should be indicated in the text of the abstract; and
• Each figure, image, table, and/or legend must be submitted as a separate file.

Images not submitted as separate high-resolution vector-based files, in black and white, or if otherwise not meeting the specifications will not be sent out to reviewers or, if the abstract is accepted, included in meeting materials. There is a limit of 5 graphics per submitted abstract. For assistance on producing journal quality images, please consult the SIIM e-tutorial series.

All figures, whether photographs, graphs, or diagrams, should be submitted electronically to the SIIM Office. If the file is smaller than 500KB it may be emailed to abstracts@siimweb.org.
