SIIM Co-Sponsor Education Session at HIMSS 2008

HIMSS 08 Banner

"The Role of Open-Source Software in Medical Informatics
and Information Technology"

Janice Honeyman-Buck, PhD presented a very well-attended session this past year at the HIMSS 2008 conference in Orlando. Dr. Honeyman-Buck is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Digital Imaging and is a member of the College of SIIM Fellows.

The development of the information systems that manage the complex medical enterprise was accomplished through the collaboration of clinicians, administrators, scientists, clerical staff, computer scientists, and information technology (IT) professionals. Open-Source development describes a process of sharing computer code and algorithms among IT professionals to facilitate the creation of tools and systems to meet a perceived need. The Open-Source community is constantly developing new and innovative solutions to problems that spur vendors to provide better systems for medical informatics. This presentation examined the role of Open-Source in Medical Informatics and introduced some of the innovation solutions that are available for IT professionals to adopt or enhance.

Objectives:

  • Understand the meaning of Open-Source software development
  • Discover examples of Open-Source software applications that may be useful in their environment
  • Understand how to formaulate a plan for incorporating Open-Source software into the working environment, where appropriate
