Imaging Informatics Professionals (IIPs)

SIIM is recognized as an expert and innovative source of education, research, and leadership in the field of Imaging Informatics. In 2007, in support of SIIM's commitment to the entire imaging informatics community, the society founded, in partnership with the ARRT, the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII). ABII administers the IIP certification examination. The IIP certification program defines the standard for the blend of competencies required for professionals in the field of imaging informatics.

The successful launch of the ABII IIP certification exam highlights the need for educational resources and study materials for imaging informatics professionals preparing for the exam, and more importantly, the need to build the body of knowledge for the emerging imaging informatics profession.

SIIM is focused on leading and coordinating this effort through the establishment of the SIIM IIP Education Advisory Network (EAN) and the development of educational courses and materials for imaging informatics professionals.

Imaging Informatics Professional Education and ABII Certification Position Statement

In the fall of 2007, the SIIM Board of Directors approved an IIP Education and ABII Certification Position Statement. Following is a summary of the basic principles of the position statement:

• The ABII IIP certification program provides a proper credential for IIPs to enhance professional development, stimulate career growth, and other objective validation of IIP experience.
• Success on the ABII IIP certification exam will be the result of experience, education, and acquired knowledge. It will cross the spectrum of imaging informatics knowledge as described in the IIP exam Test Content Outline (TCO).
• No educational course can guarantee that its content will represent the questions on the ABII IIP certification examination.
• The ABII IIP exam TCO will serve as the basis for the SIIM Education Advisory Network (EAN) to develop the body of knowledge for IIP education.
• When the EAN completes the development of the EAN core curriculum, SIIM will consider recommending the EAN content as the recommended course of study in IIP education.
• IIP educational programs offered by SIIM and it EAN participants are independent of the ABII IIP certification program.
• SIIM had recommended to ABII that individuals who serve in the leadership of ABII or who participate in the development of the IIP exam should not teach certified imaging informatics professional (CIIP) review courses.
